    Job Summary

    We are looking for an individual to fill this replacement post within the Cellular Pathology Department at St James’s University Hospital. This is a full time consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of Dental, Head & Neck and Endocrine pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT), the Leeds Dental Institute, and the region.

    The service currently has two specialist histopathologists, one being full-time and one being half-time. This post will represent an addition to the current team and is a direct replacement of a recent full-time vacancy. The case mix is extremely diverse and includes oral & maxillofacial, ENT, salivary gland, odontogenic, cervical node, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal gland histopathology specimens. Thyroid, salivary gland and neck node fine-needle aspirate samples are also covered by the group.

    There is a large postgraduate training programme in the region which includes medical and dental trainees which the group provide training for. There are strong links with the academic department of pathology with the largest clinical academic training programme in the country. INTERVIEWS WILL BE HELD: Tuesday 13 January 2026.

    Main Duties of the Job

    The successful applicant should possess FRCPath (or equivalent). They should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

    Applicants should have established skills in head & neck, dental and endocrine pathology and demonstrable interest and experience in the specialty. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is desirable.

    Job Description

    In relation to this post, it is a full time (10 PA) replacement consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region. Our department works in a collaborative and flexible way to deliver a sub-specialised pathology service tailored to the needs of the tertiary centre.

    The appointee will have specialist experience in the areas of head, neck and endocrine diagnostic surgical pathology, and also have expertise in the reporting of head, neck and endocrine cytopathology specimens. We have developed the principles of the Royal College of Pathologists guidelines to try and achieve full staffing and an equitable distribution of work among the consultants in our department.

    Any candidate who is unable to work the fulltime for personal reasons will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

    The specific objectives of the post are as follows:

    Diagnostic service: To provide, in collaboration with their Consultant colleagues, a timely and reliable pathology service in Cellular pathology. This will specifically include areas of practice relating to head and neck pathology including oral & maxillofacial pathology, endocrine pathology and non-gynaecological head neck and endocrine cytopathology. Where appropriate, to participate in the provision of the review service, which is part of the tertiary service activity. To provide advice and support to other clinical colleagues, to be available to discuss histopathological findings and to contribute to the audit and monitoring of the clinical effectiveness of medical care.

    To participate in multidisciplinary clinical care and maintain a regular programme of surgical multidisciplinary team meetings. To cover other consultant colleagues for periods of annual or study leave. This will be reciprocated when the appointee takes such leave. To actively participate in and contribute to the continuous service improvement culture in the department. To work with the Clinical Service Lead in Histopathology and the Pathology CSU Leadership Team and other staff in the delivery of an efficient and effective pathology service in keeping with Lean principles.

    To participate in the effective running of the department, contributing to an equitable share of workload and facilities. To engage in the efficient use of staff and resources for the development of the service in support of changing needs of patients and clinical users within the Trust and the network and in the context of the Trust Quality Improvement programme. To maintain a close working relationship with the other consultant histopathologists and the technical and scientific staff within the Department. To attend staff meetings and share in the open airing of views for and against any proposals for change and the acceptance of decisions taken following such discussions.

    To support the procedures, standards and initiatives required for laboratory accreditation by UKAS Ltd and inspection by the HTA. To participate in Departmental and external audit activity, including audits performed within Regional and National Specialty Networks as well as quality assurance in Histopathology. The consultant will participate in relevant National Specialist EQA Scheme(s) as appropriate to their area of specialisation, and participate in CPD activities to support these areas. To participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching as indicated.

    To contribute to the professional supervision and training of medical, scientific and technical staff within the Department, including post-graduate specialist trainees in Cellular Pathology and sub-specialist pathology trainees. To undertake research and development work within LTHT, if desired. The Trust is the leading contributor to national clinical trials, and pathology consultants all participate as required in the identification and selection of tissue samples according to the trial protocols. In addition, consultants may contribute to clinically based research activity, which may be recognised within the Trusts Research Strategy with the opportunity for additionally funded sessions.

    North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. An element of cross site work to the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven is anticipated. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a special interest to complement the other members of the department and will participate in the provision of services to the population of North Cumbria.     Key Responsibilities

    The successful applicant will join the current specialty doctors to provide elective anaesthesia sessions and contribute to a resident full shift rota not expected to exceed 1 in 8. Two 1:8 rotas are in place, one to support theatres and obstetrics and one to support ICU, both supported by a separate Consultant on-call.
