    Specific Responsibilities

    Extended theatre sessions are to be undertaken for elective work, and outpatient clinics will be conducted which would include new general surgical referrals, urgent 2-week wait GI referrals and follow-up patients.

    The post holder will provide a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialities in the Trust. Daily ward rounds and board rounds are to be provided for all in-patients, with workload shared with consultant colleagues.

    The Emergency General Surgery service at the James Paget University Hospital has undergone significant changes over the last few years. With more emphasis on ambulatory care and the opening of the surgical assessment unit (SAU), the Trust is planning to have a team more dedicated to this new and growing specialty.

    On-Call Rotas

    The Trust currently runs a 1:12 weekday on-call rota with a 1:8 weekend rota. In this 12-week cycle, the first week is a ‘Hot week’ where you will be on call from Monday to Friday. All elective activity is cancelled during this week, though other colleagues cover weekday nights from Monday to Thursday while patients remain under the hot team.

    The following week is the ‘warm week’ where you manage CEPOD theatre in the morning and carry out elective activity as per job plan in the afternoons. At the end of the warm week, you will have Friday as a day off.

    Post holders will provide with other consultants a system of mutual out-of-hours cover for annual, study and professional leave, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the department.

    Main Duties

    The primary responsibilities of this Consultant Functional Neurosurgeon role include:

    • Providing a high standard of diagnosis and treatment to outpatients and inpatients

    The South West Neurosurgery Centre is based at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. The unit provides a comprehensive Neurosurgical and Spinal Service to a population of approximately 2 million people across Devon, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, and part of Somerset.

    The region experiences a significant influx of visitors during the summer months, increasing the population considerably. The center maintains close working relationships with District General Hospitals in Truro, Barnstaple, Exeter, and Torbay. Rapid transfer of patients between these hospitals and Plymouth is facilitated by two helicopter air ambulances.
