    Position Details

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    The Respiratory Consultant will provide, in collaboration with consultant colleagues, comprehensive general medicine services while supporting the development of sub-specialty interests. The role carries responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness within both hospital and community settings.

    Clinical Responsibilities

    All clinical staff are accountable and responsible for maintaining their own clinical competence and must limit their actions to those for which they are deemed competent. As a senior employee of the Health Board, the post holder will work in close cooperation with clinical, medical professional, and managerial colleagues to provide high-quality healthcare to patients.

    Essential Qualifications and Experience

    Candidates must possess full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice, along with MRCP qualification. Applicants should be on the Specialist Register with GMC or have CCT due within 6 months of the interview date. Alternatively, CESR or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration are acceptable.

    Clinical Experience Requirements

    Essential clinical experience includes broad-based expertise in General Internal Medicine and respiratory medicine, knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent), active participation in CPD, and demonstrated expertise in General Internal Medicine. Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS is also required.

    Desirable Qualifications and Experience

    While not essential, desirable qualifications include an appropriate Higher Degree (MD, PhD, or MSc or equivalent). Previous experience within the NHS system, wider experience in research and training for sub-specialty service provision, evidence of above-average performance, and additional clinical qualifications would be advantageous.

    Research and Teaching Experience

    Ideal candidates will possess experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence to improve clinical outcomes. Evidence of organizing programs and teaching medical students and resident doctors is essential. Desirable attributes include experience initiating, progressing, and concluding research projects with publications, research degrees, organization of further teaching programs in medical education, and “Training the Trainers” experience.

    Communication and Support

    Teaching and Supervision

    Recognised Speech & Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent. Membership of The Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) is mandatory.     Team Structure and Support

    The successful candidate will join a team of eight consultants supported by four registrars from the North East London rotation and five clinical fellows, serving a population of 750,000. We understand that relocation can be challenging, which is why we provide comprehensive support through our Medical Staffing team.

    We recognize that personal circumstances may vary, and any consultant unable to work full-time for personal reasons will be eligible for consideration. If appointed, job content modifications will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

    Main Duties and Responsibilities

    The post holder will have training and expertise in both malignant and non-malignant aspects of haematology and will be expected to provide the following services to the highest standard:

    Clinical Responsibilities

    – Triage electronic referrals from primary care, including providing advice to GP colleagues and accepting appropriate referrals on routine, urgent, and suspected cancer pathways
    – Undertake three outpatient clinics per week
    – Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings relevant to your specialist area
    – Support the diagnostic service and complete in-house reporting of bone marrows
    – Attend and participate in weekly morphology review sessions

    Patient Management

    – Manage acutely unwell patients on the dedicated haematology and oncology ward as well as outlying wards and the day unit
    – Conduct daily board rounds on Sky B and perform ward rounds twice weekly
    – Participate in the on-call rota (1:7.5 ratio)

    Teaching and Supervision

    – Participate in the core medical trainee and specialist haematology trainee teaching programme
    – Serve as a clinical supervisor for junior doctors
    – Where appropriate, contribute to the existing clinical trials programme

    Governance and Quality Improvement

    – Comply with clinical governance structures and requirements within the Trust
    – Attend local morbidity and mortality meetings
    – Conduct timely investigations and responses to complaints and incidents
    – Participate in the collection and analysis of patient and carer feedback

    Essential Qualifications and Experience

    Mandatory Requirements

    – Full and Specialist registration with a valid license to practice in the UK
    – MRCP/FRCPath or equivalent qualification
    – Comprehensive understanding and competence in managing all aspects of general and malignant haematology
    – Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or CCT date within six months of interview
    – Full competence in bone marrow aspirate and biopsy procedures
    – Proficiency in lumbar puncture techniques
